The Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías (IGFAE), a joint centre of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and the Xunta de Galicia, will host, from 3 to 7 June, the conference ‘Data Science in Fundamental Physics and the bridge to industry & society‘. The meeting aims to promote dialogue between academia and industry, as well as to highlight professional opportunities for people interested in data science and its applications to society and business. The meeting will be held for the first time in Santiago de Compostela after three editions in Portugal, in the cities of Lisbon, Braga and Coimbra.
Training school and symposium
The event will take place at the Centro de Estudos Avanzados (CEA) of the USC, in the Vista Alegre Park. It consists of two parts: from 3 to 5 June there will be an intensive course on Probability, Statistics and Machine Learning, focused on PhD students and postdoctoral research staff. The sessions will be led by Glen Cowan (Professor of Physics at the Royal Holloway in London) and Pietro Vischia (researcher at the University of Oviedo and ICTEA).
This will be followed on 6 and 7 June by a symposium focusing on the relationship between fundamental physics and industry, with data science as the nexus. During these days, more than 20 representatives from companies and research centres will discuss and share knowledge about the latest trends in the sector, the demands, and practical applications of data science in everyday life.
Data science, a sky-rocketing sector
Thousands of companies around the world are currently looking for staff specialised in data science, one of the most in-demand profiles in the job market. From social app giants to retail companies, pharmaceutical, consulting or telecommunications companies. The aim of this discipline is to analyse huge data sets that are produced continuously, to find correlations, causal relationships, and patterns with which to build hypotheses, assign meanings or evaluate the efficiency of algorithms.
Within this framework, the symposium organised by the IGFAE aims, on the one hand, to improve training in data science for researchers in the early stages of their careers. And, at the same time, it offers the opportunity to establish direct contact with the labour market and, in general, with the needs of society in this field. In addition, the IGFAE will also bring participating individuals and organisations closer to its scientific capabilities in the areas of High Energy Physics, Nuclear, Astroparticle and Fundamental Physics.
