The IGFAE launches the first of its activities organized in the framework of the Science Week, which will take place in November: the second edition of the Scientific Communication Competition (C3). The general objective of this contest is to promote the scientific culture of citizenship and to promote interest in Physic particularly, stimulating the learning of its foundations.

Participation in the contest is open to anyone, with special emphasis on staff research from public research organizations; doctoral, master’s and undergraduate students; teachers from Secondary Education and the Baccalaureate who work in the area of Physics teaching; and professionals in science outreach and journalists.

It is regulated by the following bases:

1. Structure of the competition

The competition is structured in three modalities:

a) Scientific Monologues

The topic of the scientific monologues with a theme related to Physics, especially with those included in IGFAE’s areas of research. The maximum duration of the monologue will be of three minutes and the use of a projector or audiovisual tools is not permitted. The monologue will be presented in Galician, Spanish or English during the Science Week.

Deadline: registration will be open until 31 of October at 23:59 (Santiago de Compostela time).

Registration: contestants should send an email to: monologos-C3-2019@igfae.usc.es

The message must include the name and surname of the contestant, title of the monologue, contact telephone number and a brief paragraph that allows us to introduce you (are you a student? a teacher? center? academic level?). If the number of registered monologues exceeds the capacity to schedule them in a single session, the organization reserves the right to request a video with the performance to make a previous selection.

b) Experiments, demonstrations or web or mobile applications

A competition is announced for the best projects of experiments, demonstrations or web applications or for mobile devices with a theme related to Physics, especially with those included in IGFAE’s areas of research.

The presentation (in Galician, Spanish or English) will consist of a PDF format summary of the experiment, demonstration or application, and with a maximum size of 8 pages in A4 format, minimum font size of 12 points, minimum margins of 1 cm on each side of the page and with a minimum spacing of 1.15 lines. It must include title, objective, scientific principle on which it is based or which it is intended to demonstrate; material necessary for its construction, explanation of the assembly, detailed budget required for its execution (maximum of EUR 500), possible exercises that can be carried out, photographs, diagrams or other visual material (links to audiovisual material) showing what it consists of and demonstrating its feasibility.

The competition is divided in two phases:

  1. During the Science Week, the jury will select up to 5 project proposals which will pass to the next phase.
  2. Participants will execute their projects until May 2020, when they will be presented to the jury at IGFAE.

The message must include the name and surname of the contestant, PDF summary of the experiment, contact telephone number and a brief paragraph that allows us to introduce you (are you a student? teacher? center? academic level?). If you are a team, personal information of all the members and the contact person must be sent.

Jury: IGFAE memebers with the participation of Manuel Miramontes representing the network of Scientific Museums of A Coruña.

Prize: up to a maximum of 500 euros for the best 5 projects, intended for the construction of the experiment, demonstration or application, in order to present it in the network of Scientific Museums of A Coruña (https://i.gal/mc2). The best experiment, demonstration or application will also receive a prize of 500 euros.

c) Outreach articles

A contest is announced for the best article of scientific outreach with a theme related to Physics, especially with those included in IGFAE’s areas of research. Contributions, in free format, will have a maximum length of 1200 words in Galician, Spanish or English, and may be submitted in PDF format. The texts presented must not be previously published or have editorial commitments.

2. Participation

Participants will be able to compete in all modalities and send as many entries as they wish.

The presentation of a work in any category supposes that its bases are accepted.

3. Jury and selection criteria

The contributions received will be evaluated by a jury appointed by researchers from the IGFAE and external experts.

The evaluation of the works will take into account the rigor and quality of the concepts presented, the originality and interest of the topic, its adaptation to the objectives of the competition, and, especially, the ability to communicate the contents to a non-expert audience. Other aspects such as the originality of the materials employed, and the variety of resources used will also be taken into account.

The resolution of the awarding of the prizes will take place at the Main Hall of the Faculty of Physics during the Science Week.

The Jury may declare any of the prizes of the different modalities void, as well as award one or more honorary mentions.

The decisions of the jury shall be final.

4. Intellectual Property Rights

The submission to the competition implies the declaration by the participants of the originality of the works, that they are the legitimate holders of all the rights inherent to them and that they do not infringe the rights of third parties. In the event that this guarantee is proven false, and/or if actions are initiated to defend the rights of others onthe work, images or composition, the participants will be responsible for this violation, leaving the organizers exonerated of any responsibility.

Participation in the competition implies the free transfer to the University of Santiago de Compostela of non-exclusive rights of reproduction, distribution and public communication of the prize-winning works or those with honorary mentions through the IGFAE website, printed or digital media. Similarly, the IGFAE may submit them to magazines, newspapers, publishers or non-profit organizations for the dissemination of its outreach activities, both nationally and internationally.

Prize-winning authors may make their work public by whatever means they deem appropriate, provided that they state that they received an award in this competition.

Any personal data sent to the organization will be used only for the management of the contest.

5. Modification of the terms and conditions

The organization reserves the right to modify any point of these bases as long as it exists a justified and motivated cause. This would be announced through the Science Week 2019 IGFAE website (https://igfae.usc.es/igfae/scienceweek2019).

6. Prizes

All prizes are subject to the corresponding tax obligations in accordance with the provisions of current regulations.

7. Dates

The organization will communicate as soon as possible through the Science Week 2019 IGFAE website (https://igfae.usc.es/igfae/scienceweek2019) the dates on which the Science Week will be celebrated, as well as the ceremony day when the monologues will be presented, and announced the the winners of the rest of modalities.
