Research Area
Quantum mechanics and general relativity are the two great theoretical bases that explain the fundamental elements of matter and, ultimately, the Universe. But they have a major flaw, which has not yet been resolved: they are incompatible with each other. So what are the alternatives? String theory is one of the proposals that tries to build a consistent framework for quantum gravity, providing useful tools to move towards a quantum structure of space-time.
This research programme focuses on both formal and applied aspects of holographic duality (ADS/CFT correspondence), which relates quantum field theory to gravity in higher dimensions.
Research in this programme also ranges from the more formal aspects of the theory to condensed matter applications in quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics (QED and QCD).
The knowledge generated by the IGFAE in these areas is opening in recent years a new line of work linked to quantum computation and its great potential for development.
