The Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías (IGFAE) at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela announces the launching of its international recruitment programme Global Talent. This initiative aims to attract outstanding talent across all stages of the scientific career—ranging from PhD candidates to Associate Professor level—to join IGFAE in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, NW Spain). The program seeks to strengthen the institute’s existing research programs while fostering the development of new scientific areas.
With this announcement, the Institute welcomes interest from advanced postdoctoral researchers aiming to join IGFAE with an Associate Professor level position to develop an independent research line within the institute. Applications will be evaluated over the coming months by a selection committee comprising IGFAE staff and external experts.

The search encompasses a broad range of fields, both theory and experiment, including High-Energy Particle Physics, Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology; and Nuclear Physics, as well as Quantum Information Science and Technology.
Global Talent is the main recruitment programme linked to the María de Maeztu accreditation of excellence, awarded by the Spanish State Research Agency, which the IGFAE obtained in 2024. In the previous call, which received hundreds of proposals from dozens of countries, this plan allowed, among other milestones, to promote a new research programme on Gravitational Waves and facilitated the participation of the IGFAE in the LIGO collaboration.
These non-tenure track research positions, at the assistant professor level, aim to attract and support outstanding advanced postdoctoral researchers, providing resources to develop an independent research program within the institute, including discretionary annual research funds. Now in its third edition, the program has a proven track record: while the positions are not tenure-track, all previous fellows have subsequently secured tenure-track contracts at the university
The institute encourages proposals that introduce new research lines, complementing its existing strengths.
The three-year positions include additional research funds, training, and opportunities to supervise PhD students and postdocs. IGFAE will encourage and provide support to successful candidates to apply to ERC grants and Ramon y Cajal tenure-track programs.
Interested candidates should submit
- A recent CV
- A List of Publications
- A Statement of Research Interest, including a small plan for the near future
- At least three letters of recommendation
Deadline: December 21st, 2024
About the IGFAE
The Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías (IGFAE) at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) is a research institute accredited as María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Science in the periods 2017-2021 and 2024-2030. The IGFAE also takes part in the Xunta de Galicia’s CIGUS network of centres of excellence, which accredits the quality and impact of its research. It hosts around 130 researchers, including currently 14 postdocs, 70 PhD students and one ERC grantee. Researchers at IGFAE participate in experimental facilities such as CERN, LIGO, GSI/FAIR, GANIL, FRIB and the Pierre Auger Observatory.
The scientific research of the Institute is organized around three areas that are the basis for the strategic planning: The Standard Model to the Limits; Cosmic Particles and Fundamental Physics; and Nuclear Physics from the Lab to Improve People’s Health. A transversal line has been created recently to discuss the strategy for new opportunities in the field of international facilities. In addition, IGFAE activities are divided into an experimental and a theory section.
IGFAE provides a highly stimulating environment and unique professional career development opportunities. We offer training in soft skills to enhance future employability and career success of our researchers including technology transfer, entrepreneurship, dissemination, and equity/diversity perspective.
IGFAE is an Equal Opportunity Employer and particularly welcomes applications from under-represented groups in terms of gender identity, ethnic or social origin, disability, or any other characteristic. IGFAE implements its own Equality and Diversity strategy, with concrete actions committed to increase the gender, geographic and minority balance within the institute. We offer flexible working schedule to reconcile a work and family life.
