Second IP EUROTRANS Internal Training Course
Nuclear Data for Transmutation: status, needs and methods
Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
June 7 - 10, 2006
The future of nuclear energy and its acceptance is -among others- heavily dependent on a solution for the safe disposal of the nuclear waste and the operation of final geological repositories. In this context, the strategy of partitioning and transmutation of the high- level nuclear wastes is of foremost priority. With this background, the Euratom Six Framework Program (FP6) has launched the EUROTRANS project aiming a first advanced design of an European Transmutation Demonstration.
It is one of the objectives of the EUROTRANS project to guarantee the training of young scientists and engineers working in all domains of interest for this project. This Second EUROTRANS Internal Training Course focuses on basic nuclear data for transmutation. The topics of this course are:
-
low, intermediate and high energy data
-
data evaluation
-
validation of simulation tools
-
sensitivity studies.
The GENP-USC (Experimental Group of Nuclear and Particle Physics) will be very pleased to host the Second IP EUROTRANS Internal Training Course in Santiago de Compostela.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Who should attend?
This course, the second of a series of ten courses organised over a period of 4 years, is primarily designed for PhD students and Postdocs involved in the IP EUROTRANS, and accessible as well to those involved in the projects EUROPART and RED-IMPACT. The number of participants is limited to about 20 participants.
An active participation of the PhD students and Postdocs is required. Therefore, when applying, the participants should submit a short abstract (15 to 20 lines) of a presentation related to their work (at this stage: a progress report). A small grant, distributed by the organizer, will help the students whose presentation has been selected by the organizer, to finance their accommodation expenditures.
How to apply?

Local information
Galicia is the green northwest corner of Spain, the land of the thousand rivers, wildest coast and endless woods. In such a mosaic of landscapes inhabits a quiet people, used to work hardly, invent incredible stories and owners of a blessed cooking.
In the Middle Ages, all roads led to Santiago de Compostela. Now Santiago is a cosmopolitan and modern city, open to the future, but still preserves all the spirit (and the charm) of the Middle Ages. The city was European Cultural Capital of the year 2000. Now, we will be very pleased to host the meeting in Santiago de Compostela, where tradition and modernity seem to live harmonically.
Meeting place and accomodation
The Meeting will take place at Centro de Estudios Avanzados (CEA). The CEA is placed in the old town, near the Cathedral and the Historical Center, as it is shown in this map (point 19 in the map).
The Local Organizers have booked rooms in several hotels located in the old town, closed to the meeting place. It is strongly recommended to make reservations as soon as possible. The reservation and payment should be done directly in the hotels.
In case you need some support to obtain the reservation at the hotels, you can contact the Centro de Estudios Avanzados / Casa de Europa administration:

How to arrive
Santiago de Compostela has an international airport with connections to the most important European cities, directly or via Madrid or Barcelona. From the airport it is recommended to take a taxi to go to the historical city center (the price of the taxi is 15/20 euros, plus, eventually, an extra for baggage).
Weather conditions
In the month of June, temperatures in Santiago de Compostela are quite confortable, with a mean maximum of approx. 25 C and a mean minimum of 15 C. Anyway, do not forget your umbrella in Santiago!
