Would you like to learn at the IGFAE this summer? We call 10 grants for undergraduate students

The Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías (IGFAE), a joint centre of the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Xunta de Galicia, announces the 5th edition of its summer fellowships, aimed at undergraduate students. This call is funded by the Department of Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training of the Xunta de Galicia. The registration period will open on Tuesday 7 May. The aim of the summer grants is to encourage students to take part in research projects, within the framework of the scientific work carried out at the IGFAE. Interested students will be integrated into the work of one of the strategic research areas of the IGFAE, or in one of the departments of the Management Unit.

A minimum of 10 places are available, under the following conditions:

• Applicants must be studying one of the last two years of the degree, have passed at least 55% of the credits and have an average mark equal to or higher than 8 out of 10.
• The selection and award criteria are based on a maximum score of 10 points: 70% of the evaluation will be based on the academic record; 20% on the curriculum vitae (publications, prizes and training related to the stock exchange); and 10% on the letter of presentation.
• Eight of the ten scholarships are reserved for students of Physics, Mathematics, or the double degree of Mathematics and Physics, or equivalent degrees. Applications from any other field of knowledge are welcome.
• The internship will last for one month, preferably from 1 to 31 July 2024.
• The grant amounts to €780 gross. It includes accommodation in a single room in a USC residence hall, provided that the stay takes place during the preferred period. If it is not in this period, the accommodation will be subject to availability of places and budget.
• Travel grants are available for people living outside Santiago de Compostela: up to €80 for students from Galicia; up to €500 for students from outside Galicia; and up to €5,000 for students from other countries, in accordance with market travel prices and provided that budgetary possibilities allow. Grants must be supported by documents proving the expenses.
• Costs arising from any formalities related to obtaining the documents authorising the stay in Spain, registration with the Social Security and obtaining a valid bank account for the receipt of the aid will be covered.

About the IGFAE

The Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías (IGFAE) is a research centre created in 1999 by the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Xunta de Galicia. It was founded with the aim of coordinating and promoting scientific and technical research in the fields of High Energy, Particle and Nuclear Physics, and related areas such as Astrophysics, Medical Physics or Instrumentation. It hosts more than 140 people who participate in experimental facilities such as CERN, LIGO, GSI/FAIR or the Pierre Auger Observatory, among others.
