The study of the structure of atomic nuclei, where almost all the mass that composes matter is found, has improved the understanding of the interactions and reactions that take place inside them.
Within this area, the IGFAE team carries out basic research in reference facilities. This is the case of FAIR (Germany), which in the coming years will become the largest nuclear physics laboratory in the world. There, the Institute’s team is present in the R3B experiment, with an important role in the development of detectors such as CALIFA. Our team also has a notable presence in collaborations such as FRIB (USA) or GANIL (France).
In Santiago de Compostela, IGFAE staff also develop projects at the Laser Acceleration and Applications Laboratory (L2A2), a USC facility specialised in laser-plasma acceleration. In this line, there is a constant work channel around social applications in the field of natural radioactivity, flash radiotherapy and proton therapy.
