Hyper Kamiokande

On the main island of Japan, Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) is currently being built, which will be the largest underground experiment in the world to better understand the nature of neutrinos, the asymmetry between matter and antimatter, and dark matter, among other major scientific challenges.

Hunting neutrinos is one of the greatest trials of physics in the present century. Detecting and studying these elusive particles, which barely interact with the rest of matter, is a challenge that involves not only issues related to physics, but also enormous civil engineering works and complex systems for data collection and analysis.

On the main island of Japan, Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) is currently being built, which will be the largest underground experiment in the world to better understand these particles.

The scientific program of Hyper-K is very broad and ambitious. Among other objectives, the experiment aims to understand why there is more matter than antimatter in this universe, how neutrino oscillations work (their change of “flavour”), improve knowledge of dark matter, and find evidence of proton decay.

Hyper-K will succeed Kamiokande (1983–1996) and Super-Kamiokande (1996–present), two experiments with the same purpose that have operated over the past decades and have contributed major milestones in neutrino physics. Among other recognitions, the discoveries made there were awarded the Nobel Prizes in Physics in 2002 (Masatoshi Koshiba) and 2015 (Takaaki Kajita).

The Hyper-K complex has been built beneath what are known as the Japanese Alps, with the aim of isolating itself as much as possible from the natural radiation produced by cosmic rays and being able to detect more precisely neutrinos coming from outside the Earth. In addition to these natural sources, Hyper-K will also receive a high-intensity neutrino beam from the J-PARC accelerator, located in Tokai, 295 kilometers away, on the west coast of the island.

The most notable element is an enormous underground tank 68 meters in diameter and 71 meters high, which will be filled with 260,000 tons of ultrapure water. The walls will be covered with more than 20,000 photomultiplier tubes, capable of detecting the light emitted by neutrinos when they interact with water molecules.

Thanks to its larger size and sensitivity, Hyper-K will obtain a large volume of data that will allow very precise measurements of neutrino properties and their importance in describing the universe around us. The start of data taking is scheduled for 2028.

The IGFAE team will be responsible, specifically, for the construction of radioactive calibration sources, analysis of atmospheric and accelerator neutrino data, and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.
