The IGFAE was one of the promoters of the construction of the Laser Acceleration Laboratory for Applications (L2A2), a USC research infrastructure where new technologies and applications of laser-plasma acceleration are being developed. Within this research programme, the Institute’s staff is focused on the medical applications of this particle acceleration technique.
The two main current lines of work are the production of laser radioisotopes for PET (positron emission tomography) imaging and new laser-generated X-ray sources and their application to imaging. In this context, L2A2 staff are involved in projects on radiobiology and other branches of health science, while the laboratory hosts scientists from other institutions who use this technology in their research.
