



{"id":12269,"date":"2022-10-31T11:29:58","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T09:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/igfae.usc.es\/~igfae-old\/velo-entra-en-accion\/"},"modified":"2022-10-31T21:22:41","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T19:22:41","slug":"velo-entra-en-accion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/igfae.usc.es\/~igfae-old\/gl\/velo-entra-en-accion\/","title":{"rendered":"VELO entra en acci\u00f3n"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>O subdetector VELO do LHCb foi recentemente ali\u00f1ado co feixe de prot\u00f3ns do LHC, acheg\u00e1ndose a unha distancia sen precedentes, marcando un importante fito na toma de datos do experimento<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O pasado venres 21 de outubro, o experimento LHCb do Gran Colisionador de Hadr\u00f3ns (LHC) superou un importante fito deste terceiro ciclo de operaci\u00f3n do acelerador. O localizador de v\u00e9rtices de \u00faltima xeraci\u00f3n <a href=\"https:\/\/lhcb-outreach.web.cern.ch\/detector\/vertex-locator-velo\/\">VELO<\/a> (<em>VErtex LOcator<\/em>) foi ali\u00f1ado co feixe de prot\u00f3ns do LHC, acheg\u00e1ndose como nunca antes ning\u00fan outro detector no mundo. Este proceso, co\u00f1ecido como &#8220;peche do VELO&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/igfae.usc.es\/~igfae-old\/gl\/instalacion-detector-velo-lhc\/\">pon fin ao per\u00edodo de instalaci\u00f3n e posta en marcha na que participaron os investigadores do IGFAE Antonio Fern\u00e1ndez Prieto, Edgar Lemos Cid e Efr\u00e9n Rodr\u00edguez Rodr\u00edguez<\/a> o pasado mes de maio e permitir\u00e1 ao experimento reconstru\u00edr as traxectorias das colisi\u00f3ns de part\u00edculas no LHCb con extrema precisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>O experimento LHCb analiza as part\u00edculas lanzadas cara adiante desde o punto de colisi\u00f3n dos dous feixes do LHC. En particular, o equipo de LHCb busca un tipo de part\u00edcula chamada mes\u00f3n B, que se caracteriza por conter un quark &#8220;beleza&#8221;. Os mes\u00f3ns B son importantes para a investigaci\u00f3n en f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas porque as s\u00faas interacci\u00f3ns poden dar pistas sobre as limitaci\u00f3ns do Modelo Est\u00e1ndar, que actualmente goberna toda a f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas. A principios deste ano, utilizando datos da versi\u00f3n anterior do detector, o LHCb anunciou o descubrimento de novos tipos de asimetr\u00eda materia-antimateria e de novas part\u00edculas ex\u00f3ticas. Ambos os temas, e moitos m\u00e1is, seguiranse investigando co novo detector.<\/p>\n<p>Para poder comprender plenamente estas interacci\u00f3ns de part\u00edculas, neces\u00edtanse m\u00e1is datos. O traballo de VELO consiste en reconstru\u00edr completamente as traxectorias das colisi\u00f3ns de part\u00edculas, seleccionar as interacci\u00f3ns importantes nas que interve\u00f1en os mes\u00f3ns B e analizalas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ten que estar incriblemente preto dos feixes para obter a m\u00e1xima precisi\u00f3n&#8221;, explica Paula Collins, f\u00edsica experimental do LHCb. VELO cons\u00e9gueo achegando gradualmente pares de placas ao feixe, tan preto que mesmo entran no baleiro do tubo do feixe do LHC. O subdetector est\u00e1 composto por mill\u00f3ns de p\u00edxeles, que act\u00faan como unha c\u00e1mara, tomando imaxes da interacci\u00f3n a unha velocidade de 14 mill\u00f3ns de veces por segundo.<\/p>\n<p>As placas comezan cunha anchura duns 3 cm, e m\u00f3vense coidadosamente para centrarse ao redor do feixe. &#8220;Cando est\u00e1 pechado, a apertura pola que pasan os feixes do LHC \u00e9 de s\u00f3 3,5 mm&#8221;, contin\u00faa Collins. &#8220;Isto \u00e9 algo as\u00ed como o di\u00e1metro dun lapis, e os feixes do LHC de 400 megajulios te\u00f1en que pasar por este espazo tan estreito&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Esta impresionante faza\u00f1a non poder\u00eda lograrse sen un enorme esforzo de equipo para dese\u00f1ar, instalar e facer funcionar o VELO. O detector do LHCb someteuse a unha revisi\u00f3n completa para preparar o terceiro ciclo do LHC (Run 3), que comezou o 5 de xullo de 2022. O VELO \u00e9 s\u00f3 un dos novos subdetectores que aumentaron a precisi\u00f3n e a capacidade de toma de datos do LHCb. Outros subdetectores novos son o novo rastrexador ascendente (UT) e o rastrexador de fibra centelleante (SciFi), que analizan o feixe a ambos os dous lados do im\u00e1n central do LHCb.<\/p>\n<p>Desde o inicio do LHC, descubr\u00edronse a existencia de 68 novos hadrones, 60 dos cales foron descubertos polo experimento LHCb.
