El grupo experimental HEP de IGFAE participa en el experimento internacional NEXT, <a href=\"http:\/\/next.ific.uv.es\/next\/\">http:\/\/next.ific.uv.es\/next\/<\/a>, instalado en el Laboratorio Subterr\u00e1neo de Canfranc, <a href=\"http:\/\/lsc-canfranc.es\/es\/\">http:\/\/lsc-canfranc.es\/es\/<\/a>, bajo la monta\u00f1a de Tobazo, en los Pirineos. NEXT es uno de los experimentos que actualmente compiten para descifrar la verdadera naturaleza del neutrino, para comprender si es su propia antipart\u00edcula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">Esta no es una tarea f\u00e1cil, los neutrinos son tan esquivos y tan ligeros, que lo que ser\u00eda una tarea trivial para otras part\u00edculas, determinar si son su antipart\u00edcula, es casi imposible en ellas. Solo podemos hacerlo mediante un proceso en el que el neutrino se comporte como una part\u00edcula y como una antipart\u00edcula. Y este fen\u00f3meno podr\u00eda ocurrir en unos pocos n\u00facleos, donde dos de sus neutrones se convierten en dos protones intercambiando entre ellos un neutrino\/antineutrino y liberando dos electrones. Este proceso se llama desintegraci\u00f3n beta doble sin neutrinos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">El detector NEXT es un tanque cil\u00edndrico de xen\u00f3n gaseoso, sometido a un intenso gradiente el\u00e9ctrico y con sus dos cubiertas equipadas con sensores de luz. El xen\u00f3n act\u00faa como un objetivo, el n\u00facleo donde podr\u00eda ocurrir esta desintegraci\u00f3n hipot\u00e9tica, y como es gaseoso, los electrones producidos dejar\u00edan una pista, una trayectoria de unos pocos cent\u00edmetros. Nuestro detector busca una se\u00f1al inequ\u00edvoca: dos electrones cuya energ\u00eda, seg\u00fan la famosa ley de Einstein, coincide con la masa perdida del n\u00facleo padre, el xen\u00f3n. Nuestros requisitos son diversos y dif\u00edciles de alcanzar: una gran cantidad de xen\u00f3n (para tener un gran n\u00famero de n\u00facleos donde pueden ocurrir las desintegraciones), una excelente reconstrucci\u00f3n de las pistas (para identificar los dos electrones), una medici\u00f3n muy precisa de la energ\u00eda (para asegurarnos de que corresponde a la masa perdida del n\u00facleo padre) y, finalmente, un entorno ultra limpio de contaminaci\u00f3n por radiaci\u00f3n (para que no tengamos eventos que nos puedan confundir, de ah\u00ed que nuestro laboratorio est\u00e9 dentro de la monta\u00f1a, protegido de los rayos c\u00f3smicos, y los elementos detectores son ultra puros, evitando la contaminaci\u00f3n radioactiva).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">En el laboratorio de Canfranc hemos instalado el primer detector NEXT, llamado NEW. El detector contiene 10 kg de xen\u00f3n, con el cual nuestro objetivo principal es superar todas las dificultades t\u00e9cnicas y experimentales que implica realizar esta medici\u00f3n con una nueva t\u00e9cnica. Los resultados son muy prometedores, y por esta raz\u00f3n ya estamos construyendo uno m\u00e1s grande, que puede tener un rango m\u00e1s largo, 100 kg de xen\u00f3n, en los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os. Y en una d\u00e9cada, alcanzar una tonelada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">Este es un experimento que requiere un instrumento complejo, preciso y ultra silencioso; y para a los f\u00edsicos, delicadeza y paciencia.
