Os raios c\u00f3smicos con enerx\u00edas de baixas a moderadas son ben co\u00f1ecidos, mentres que aqueles con enerx\u00edas extremadamente altas seguen sendo moi misteriosos. Ao detectar e estudar estas part\u00edculas raras, o Observatorio Pierre Auger est\u00e1 a abordar os enigmas da s\u00faa orixe e existencia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">O Observatorio Auger \u00e9 un &#8220;detector h\u00edbrido&#8221; que emprega dous m\u00e9todos independentes para detectar e estudar os raios c\u00f3smicos de alta enerx\u00eda. Unha t\u00e9cnica detecta part\u00edculas de alta enerx\u00eda a trav\u00e9s da s\u00faa interacci\u00f3n coa auga colocada en tanques detectores de superficie. A outra t\u00e9cnica rastrexa o desenvolvemento de catarata de aire mediante a observaci\u00f3n da luz ultravioleta emitida nas capas altas atmosfera da Terra. A natureza h\u00edbrida do Observatorio Pierre Auger proporciona d\u00faas formas independentes de ver os raios c\u00f3smicos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">O grupo de F\u00edsica de Astropart\u00edculas en IGFAE dirixido polo Prof. Enrique Zas desempe\u00f1ou un papel relevante desde a s\u00faa incorporaci\u00f3n \u00e1 Colaboraci\u00f3n Auger en 2002. Entre as moitas contribuci\u00f3ns deste grupo, cabe mencionar a procura de neutrinos de ultra alta enerx\u00eda e a an\u00e1lise de cataratas inclinadas. Ambos traballos permitiron lograr importantes resultados cient\u00edficos como os dous recentemente galardoados como os Dez avances m\u00e1is importantes do mundo da f\u00edsica de 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">O grupo de F\u00edsica de Astropart\u00edculas est\u00e1 composto por catro membros principais (Jaime \u00c1lvarez-Mu\u00f1iz, Lorenzo Caz\u00f3n, Gonzalo Parente e Enrique Zas), dous investigadores posdoutorais (Marvin Gottowik e Felix Riehn), e catro estudantes de doutoramento (Juan Ammerman, Sergio Cabana, Yago Lema e Miguel Martins).
