Este dispositivo, xa en funcionamento, medir\u00e1 con precisi\u00f3n electr\u00f3ns e mu\u00f3ns para estudar a actividade solar e as condici\u00f3ns da atmosfera terrestre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Avanzouse moito na comprensi\u00f3n da orixe e natureza dos raios c\u00f3smicos desde que o f\u00edsico austriaco Victor Hess os descubrise en 1912 empregando un globo aerost\u00e1tico a 5.300 m de altura. Sabemos que case todas estas part\u00edculas son n\u00facleos de hidr\u00f3xeno e de todos os elementos da t\u00e1boa peri\u00f3dica, ainda que as causas polas que adquiren enerx\u00edas moi superiores \u00e1s conseguidas polos aceleradores m\u00e1is potentes non son do todo co\u00f1ecidas. O mesmo ocorre \u00e1 hora de determinar a s\u00faa orixe; \u00e9 practicamente imposible, salvo para as part\u00edculas de enerx\u00edas m\u00e1is altas. Tam\u00e9n hai raios c\u00f3smicos de baixa enerx\u00eda provintes do Sol, que compo\u00f1en o co\u00f1ecido vento solar. A s\u00faa intensidade crece coa actividade solar e os seus efectos sobre os sistemas de comunicaci\u00f3ns e de posicionamento global como o GPS e outros dispositivos electr\u00f3nicos en forma de tormenta magn\u00e9tica poden ser desastrosos. Por iso \u00e9 fundamental mellorar as t\u00e9cnicas de detecci\u00f3n temper\u00e1 dos devanditos eventos para previr no posible o seu impacto.<\/p>\n<p>Con este prop\u00f3sito, un equipo do Instituto Galego de F\u00edsica de Altas Enerx\u00edas (IGFAE) da Universidade de Santiago (USC) desenvolveu un detector de raios c\u00f3smicos que foi finalmente instalado na base cient\u00edfica \u201cJuan Carlos I\u201d, situada na Isla Livingston da Ant\u00e1rtida. Despois do seu traslado no Buque de Investigaci\u00f3ns Oceanogr\u00e1ficas \u201cHesp\u00e9rides\u201d, o equipo finalizou a posta en marcha de TRISTAN o pasado mes de decembro como parte do Observatorio Ant\u00e1rtico de Raios C\u00f3smicos (ORCA), onde recompilar\u00e1 datos ata a chegada do ver\u00e1n austral en marzo. Con eles, analizarase a actividade solar e estudarase o efecto do campo magn\u00e9tico terrestre sobre a propagaci\u00f3n dos raios c\u00f3smicos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medici\u00f3ns desde o continente xeado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A expedici\u00f3n \u00e1 Ant\u00e1rtida comezou a principios de novembro do 2019 cando o investigador do IGFAE e profesor da USC, Juan A. Garz\u00f3n, e o estudante de doutoramento, Dami\u00e1n Garc\u00eda Castro, partiron a Cartaxena para a montaxe do detector TRISTAN a bordo do \u201cHesp\u00e9rides\u201d. O Prof. Garz\u00f3n acompa\u00f1ou ao detector durante todo o traxecto con obxecto de supervisar o seu funcionamento. Ao longo do mesmo, TRISTAN tomou datos dunha rexi\u00f3n particularmente interesante onde o escudo magn\u00e9tico terrestre \u00e9 lixeiramente m\u00e1is d\u00e9bil e que a\u00ednda non foi estudada con detalle a nivel de superficie terrestre: a denominada Anomal\u00eda Magn\u00e9tica do Atl\u00e1ntico Sur.<\/p>\n<p>Unha vez na Isla Livingston, despois de acondicionar a base \u201cJuan Carlos I\u201d para o seu uso polo persoal investigador, o detector TRISTAN foi posto en funcionamento a \u00faltima semana de decembro no observatorio ORCA, xunto con outros dous detectores desenvolvidos pola Universidade de Alcal\u00e1 (UAH), centro coordinador do proxecto.<\/p>\n<p>TRISTAN (TRasgo para InveSTigaciones ANt\u00e1rticas) \u00e9 un detector tipo TRASGO coa principal caracter\u00edstica de identificar mu\u00f3ns e electr\u00f3ns, part\u00edculas secundarias orixinadas pola interacci\u00f3n dos raios c\u00f3smicos coa atmosfera terrestre, mediante un an\u00e1lise software. Tam\u00e9n \u00e9 capaz de determinar o tempo de chegada, cunha precisi\u00f3n superior ao nanosegundo \u2012unha milmillon\u00e9sima de segundo\u2012 e a direcci\u00f3n de incidencia de ata unhas 20 part\u00edculas producidas nunha mesma interacci\u00f3n; dese xeito poder\u00edase acceder de forma indirecta a algunhas das propiedades, direcci\u00f3n e enerx\u00eda do raio c\u00f3smico primario.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Datos complementarios desde Santiago<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No ano 2014, no laboratorio LabCAF da Facultade de F\u00edsica da USC instalouse para a toma de datos outro detector tipo TRASGO, pero de maiores prestaci\u00f3ns: TRAGALDABAS (<em>Trasgo for the AnaLysis of the nuclear matter Decay, the Atmosphere, the earth B- Field And the Solar activity<\/em>). \u201cA an\u00e1lise conxunta dos datos tomados de forma simult\u00e1nea por ambos os detectores, dada a s\u00faa capacidade direccional e a gran distancia entre eles \u2012ao redor de 13.000 km\u2012 ofrece unha oportunidade \u00fanica para mellorar significativamente os resultados que cada un dos detectores pode ofrecer por separado, en particular os relativos \u00e1 posible detecci\u00f3n temper\u00e1 de tormentas magn\u00e9ticas\u201d, explica o investigador do IGFAE. As medici\u00f3ns con ambos dispositivos estudaranse xunto coas observaci\u00f3ns de URAGAN \u2012detector de mu\u00f3ns situado no Instituto MEPhI, en Moscova\u2012 para correlacionar t\u00f3dolos datos.
