{"id":20628,"date":"2025-06-20T13:53:41","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T11:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/igfae.usc.es\/igfae\/?p=20628"},"modified":"2025-08-19T14:22:57","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T12:22:57","slug":"pierre-auger-eventos-anita","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/igfae.usc.es\/igfae\/pierre-auger-eventos-anita\/","title":{"rendered":"O IGFAE coordina a an\u00e1lise duns misteriosos eventos procedentes do xeo da Ant\u00e1rtida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Entre os anos 2016 e 2018, o experimento ANITA (Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna), unha rede de antenas montada en globo sobre a estratosfera da Ant\u00e1rtida, detectou dous misteriosos sinais de emisi\u00f3n de radio que espertaron un gran interese na comunidade cient\u00edfica. Parec\u00edan proceder do interior da Terra, coma se a part\u00edcula que as producise puidera atravesar miles de quil\u00f3metros do subsolo sen interactuar con ningunha outra part\u00edcula no seu traxecto.<\/p>\n<p>As caracter\u00edsticas destes sinais electromagn\u00e9ticos lembraban \u00e1 das producidas por fervenzas ou choivas de part\u00edculas xeradas na colisi\u00f3n de part\u00edculas altamente enerx\u00e9ticas coa atmosfera. Pero, neste caso, estas part\u00edculas chegaban desde unha direcci\u00f3n contraria \u00e1 habitual: no canto de proceder do ceo, vi\u00f1an desde abaixo cara arriba. Isto levou a propo\u00f1er que poder\u00edan ser neutrinos (part\u00edculas case sen masa, que raramente interact\u00faan coa materia), que atravesaron o planeta e producir\u00edan unha fervenza de part\u00edculas ao emerxer.<\/p>\n<p>Con todo, esta explicaci\u00f3n pronto atopou problemas. \u00c1s enerx\u00edas extremadamente altas que deber\u00edan ter os neutrinos para explicar a intensidade dos sinais observados en ANITA, ter\u00edan que ser absorbidos pola Terra, non poder\u00edan simplemente atravesala. Ademais, se este tipo de eventos fose com\u00fan, ter\u00edan que detectarse tam\u00e9n noutros observatorios, como os Observatorios Pierre Auger (situado en Arxentina) ou IceCube (localizado na propia Ant\u00e1rtida).<\/p>\n<p>Neste contexto, a colaboraci\u00f3n de Pierre Auger, na que participa o IGFAE, recompilou e analizou os datos observados entre 2004 e 2018 pola s\u00faa rede de detectores, que se estende ao longo e ancho de 3.000 km2 na provincia arxentina de Mendoza, as\u00ed como polos seus 27 telescopios de luz fluorescente. Os resultados <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.134.121003\">public\u00e1ronse recentemente na revista <em>Physical Review Letters<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>nunha an\u00e1lise levada a cabo pola colaboraci\u00f3n internacional Pierre Auger, e coliderada por Enrique Zas, investigador do IGFAE e catedr\u00e1tico da USC. E a pesar de que se refugan algunhas das hip\u00f3teses sobre estes sinais, non se puido despexar totalmente a inc\u00f3gnita sobre a s\u00faa orixe.<\/p>\n<p>No artigo desc\u00e1rtase que os dous eventos an\u00f3malos detectados por ANITA poidan explicarse mediante choivas de part\u00edculas co\u00f1ecidas ou interacci\u00f3ns previstas polo Modelo Est\u00e1ndar da f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas. S\u00f3 se atopou un evento compatible con estas caracter\u00edsticas, consistente co esperado debido a imperfecci\u00f3ns na reconstruci\u00f3n, pero nun n\u00famero moi inferior \u00e1s decenas de eventos que deber\u00edan detectarse se os fen\u00f3menos observados por ANITA fosen com\u00fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemostramos que estes dous eventos an\u00f3malos non poden deberse a choivas de aire que se desenvolven na atmosfera en direcci\u00f3n ascendente. Isto descarta a maior\u00eda das explicaci\u00f3ns baseadas en nova f\u00edsica m\u00e1is al\u00f3 do Modelo Est\u00e1ndar que se suxeriron. Pero o misterio destes dous eventos a\u00ednda non se resolveu\u201d, resume Enrique Zas.<\/p>\n<p>Coas explicaci\u00f3ns m\u00e1is plausibles descartadas, a comunidade cient\u00edfica mira agora cara a fen\u00f3menos menos explorados. \u201cUnha posibilidade \u00e9 que os sinais rexistrados por ANITA non prove\u00f1an de part\u00edculas que atravesaron a Terra, sen\u00f3n dalg\u00fan tipo de reflexo an\u00f3malo de ondas de radio no xeo ant\u00e1rtico a\u00ednda non comprendido\u201d, engaden Enrique Zas e Jaime \u00c1lvarez-Mu\u00f1iz, investigadores do IGFAE, que concl\u00faen: \u201cEste tipo de interpretaci\u00f3n requirir\u00eda un estudo m\u00e1is detallado da estrutura do xeo ant\u00e1rtico e de como poder\u00edan amplificarse ou deformarse os sinais en certas condici\u00f3ns\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>O papel do Observatorio Pierre Auger<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Nesta an\u00e1lise tiveron especial relevancia os telescopios de fluorescencia do Observatorio Pierre Auger, que captan a fluorescencia emitida polo nitr\u00f3xeno atmosf\u00e9rico cando unha choiva de part\u00edculas cruza a atmosfera. Grazas a esta t\u00e9cnica foi posible descartar que os eventos detectados por ANITA tivesen a s\u00faa orixe nas choivas de part\u00edculas ascendentes.<\/p>\n<p>O Observatorio Pierre Auger, actualmente en proceso de actualizaci\u00f3n, continuar\u00e1 sendo clave para explorar estes fen\u00f3menos que implican o estudo das astropart\u00edculas. O Instituto Galego de F\u00edsica de Altas Enerx\u00edas (IGFAE), centro mixto da USC e a Xunta de Galicia, \u00e9 un dos membros fundadores desta colaboraci\u00f3n, que naceu a comezos do s\u00e9culo XXI. Actualmente o persoal do centro segue ocupando postos de alta responsabilidade na colaboraci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica, que implica a preto de 500 persoas de case un centenar de instituci\u00f3ns de todo o mundo.<\/p>\n<p>Ademais de Enrique Zas e Jaime \u00c1lvarez-Mu\u00f1iz, asinan o artigo os investigadores do IGFAE Juan Ammerman Yebra, Sergio Cabana Freire, Lorenzo Caz\u00f3n Boado, Marvin Gottowik, Yago Lema Cape\u00e1ns, Miguel Martins, Gonzalo Parente e Felix Riehn.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Sobre o IGFAE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>O\u00a0Instituto Galego de F\u00edsica de Altas Enerx\u00edas (IGFAE), \u00e9 un centro de investigaci\u00f3n creado en 1999 pola Universidade de Santiago de Compostela e a Xunta de Galicia. Naceu co obxectivo de coordinar e fomentar a investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica e t\u00e9cnica nos campos da F\u00edsica de Alta Enerx\u00eda, Part\u00edculas e Nuclear, e \u00e1reas relacionadas como a Astrof\u00edsica, a F\u00edsica M\u00e9dica ou a Instrumentaci\u00f3n. Acolle a arredor de 140 persoas que participan en instalaci\u00f3ns experimentais como o CERN, o Observatorio Pierre Auger, LIGO ou GSI\/FAIR, entre outras.<\/p>\n<p>O centro foi acreditado en d\u00faas ocasi\u00f3ns (2017 e 2023) como Unidade de Excelencia Mar\u00eda de Maeztu por parte da Axencia Estatal de Investigaci\u00f3n do Goberno de Espa\u00f1a. Tam\u00e9n forma parte da rede CIGUS da Xunta de Galicia, que acredita a calidade e o impacto da s\u00faa investigaci\u00f3n.
