Na categor\u00eda de F\u00edsica Fundamental, o premio recaeu na Organizaci\u00f3n Europea para a Investigaci\u00f3n Nuclear (CERN), e os seus catro principais experimentos: ATLAS, CMS, ALICE e LHCb. Na listaxe de persoas galardoadas (as m\u00e1is de 13.500 que compo\u00f1en estas grandes colaboraci\u00f3ns experimentais), <a href=\"https:\/\/breakthroughprize.org\/Laureates\/1\/L3995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">figuran m\u00e1is de 30 membros actuais do Instituto Galego de F\u00edsica de Altas Enerx\u00edas (IGFAE)<\/a>, centro de investigaci\u00f3n da USC e a Xunta de Galicia, aos que hai que sumar un importante n\u00famero de estudantes de doutoramento e persoal investigador que desenvolveron parte da s\u00faa carreira no centro.<\/p>\n<p>O premio outorgouse \u00e1s catro colaboraci\u00f3ns polas s\u00faas \u201cmedici\u00f3ns detalladas das propiedades do bos\u00f3n de Higgs, que confirman o mecanismo de ruptura de simetr\u00eda da xeraci\u00f3n de masa, o achado de novas part\u00edculas relacionadas coa interacci\u00f3n forte, o estudo de procesos raros e da asimetr\u00eda materia-antimateria, e a exploraci\u00f3n da natureza \u00e1s distancias m\u00e1is curtas e condici\u00f3ns m\u00e1s extremas no Gran Colisionador de Hadr\u00f3ns do CERN\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Desde que os primeiros feixes de part\u00edculas comezaron a circular polo LHC, en setembro de 2008, os catro experimentos puxeron a proba, cunha precisi\u00f3n sen precedentes, o Modelo Est\u00e1ndar e outras teor\u00edas que describen os elementos fundamentais da materia e as s\u00faas interacci\u00f3ns. Entre outros fitos, as instalaci\u00f3ns do CERN fixeron posible a detecci\u00f3n experimental do bos\u00f3n de Higgs no ano 2012. Nos vindeiros anos, coa actualizaci\u00f3n prevista a partir do ano 2030, ag\u00e1rdase que o LHC contin\u00fae ampliando as fronteiras do co\u00f1ecemento da f\u00edsica fundamental.<\/p>\n<p>A directora xeral do CERN, Fabiola Gianotti, declarou: \u201cEstou moi orgullosa de ver reco\u00f1ecidos os extraordinarios logros das colaboraci\u00f3ns do LHC con este prestixioso premio\u201d, aludindo aos \u201cesforzos colectivos, a dedicaci\u00f3n, a competencia e o duro traballo de miles de persoas de todo o mundo que contrib\u00faen a diario a ampliar as fronteiras do co\u00f1ecemento humano\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O IGFAE no CERN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Na actualidade, o equipo do IGFAE en LHCb est\u00e1 composto por 33 persoas: oito investigadores s\u00e9nior, tres posdoutorais, quince estudantes de doutoramento, un enxe\u00f1eiro doutor, tres t\u00e9cnicos e tres estudantes de m\u00e1ster.<\/p>\n<p>O Instituto \u00e9 un dos membros fundadores do experimento LHCb, e actualmente representa o equipo espa\u00f1ol m\u00e1is numeroso neste experimento, ocupando ademais cargos de alta responsabilidade na colaboraci\u00f3n. Entre outros aspectos, o IGFAE tivo un papel protagonista no dese\u00f1o, construci\u00f3n e instalaci\u00f3n de detectores de LHCb como o Silicon Tracker ou o Vertex Locator (VELO), esenciais para rexistrar e analizar as colisi\u00f3ns de part\u00edculas.<\/p>\n<p>Al\u00e9n da parte experimental, o persoal do Instituto mant\u00e9n unha estreita colaboraci\u00f3n co CERN desde a perspectiva te\u00f3rica, en \u00e1reas de estudo como a cromodin\u00e1mica cu\u00e1ntica, os neutrinos ou a f\u00edsica nuclear. Do mesmo xeito, o persoal do IGFAE est\u00e1 presente nos grupos de discusi\u00f3n dos futuros proxectos do CERN, as\u00ed como na Estratexia Europea de F\u00edsica de Part\u00edculas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Premios Breakthrough<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O premio Breakthrough, dotado con tres mill\u00f3ns de euros, destinarase, de acordo coas direcci\u00f3ns dos experimentos, ao financiamento de bolsas de doutoramento de estudantes que traballan nas instituci\u00f3ns pertencentes \u00e1s catro colaboraci\u00f3ns. Na actualidade forman parte de ATLAS, CMS, ALICE e LHCb m\u00e1is de 13.500 persoas de 70 pa\u00edses.<\/p>\n<p>Os galard\u00f3ns naceron en 2012, impulsados por un dos creadores de Google, Sergey Brin, o fundador de Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, e a s\u00faa parella, Priscilla Chan, a cient\u00edfica e empresaria Anne Wojcicki e os fil\u00e1ntropos Yuri e Julia Milner. Reco\u00f1ecen investigaci\u00f3ns de ciencia b\u00e1sica con impacto mundial nas categor\u00edas das Ciencias da Vida, a F\u00edsica Fundamental e as Matem\u00e1ticas, ademais de nove premios New Horizon a novos talentos da ciencia.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Sobre o IGFAE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>O Instituto Galego de F\u00edsica de Altas Enerx\u00edas (IGFAE) da Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) \u00e9 un centro de investigaci\u00f3n acreditado como Unidade de Excelencia Mar\u00eda de Maeztu pola Axencia Estatal de Investigaci\u00f3n nos per\u00edodos 2017-2021 e 2024-2030. O IGFAE tam\u00e9n forma parte da rede CIGUS da Xunta de Galicia, que reco\u00f1ece a calidade e o impacto da s\u00faa investigaci\u00f3n, e est\u00e1 cofinanciado pola Uni\u00f3n Europea a trav\u00e9s do Programa Galicia Feder 2021-2027. Conta cun cadro de arredor de 130 persoas, inclu\u00edndo m\u00e1is de 20 postdoutorais e 50 estudantes de doutoramento. O persoal investigador do IGFAE participa en instalaci\u00f3ns experimentais como o CERN, LIGO, GSI\/FAIR, GANIL, FRIB e o Observatorio Pierre Auger.
