{"id":17609,"date":"2024-04-08T14:16:19","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T12:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/igfae-copia\/gw-230529-igfae\/"},"modified":"2024-12-26T11:04:56","modified_gmt":"2024-12-26T10:04:56","slug":"gw-230529-onda-gravitacional-igfae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/igfae.usc.es\/igfae\/gw-230529-onda-gravitacional-igfae\/","title":{"rendered":"Unha misteriosa onda gravitacional: o IGFAE participa na detecci\u00f3n dunha pouco habitual colisi\u00f3n de dous obxectos c\u00f3smicos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>O 29 maio de 2023, un dos detectores da<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ligo.caltech.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> rede LIGO<\/a> para a observaci\u00f3n de ondas gravitacionais, situado en Livingston (Luisiana), ao sur dos Estados Unidos, observou un sinal que chegaba desde 650 mill\u00f3ns de anos luz. Despois de case un ano de an\u00e1lise, os resultados sobre este sinal (<strong>GW230529<\/strong>), presentados o pasado venres na reuni\u00f3n mensual da American Physical Society, supo\u00f1en unha especie de misterio c\u00f3smico: a masa dun dos dous obxectos cuxa colisi\u00f3n xerou esta onda gravitacional at\u00f3pase nun intervalo moi pouco explorado ata o momento: \u00e9 demasiado pesado para ser unha estrela de neutr\u00f3ns, pero moito m\u00e1is lixeiro que calquera burato negro co\u00f1ecido ata agora.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00e9 o momento, a colaboraci\u00f3n LIGO-Virgo-Kagra (LVK), formada por case 3.000 cient\u00edficos das tres redes de observatorios que participan na detecci\u00f3n de ondas gravitacionais, non puido revelar a natureza deste obxecto. S\u00f3 as futuras detecci\u00f3ns de eventos similares, especialmente os acompa\u00f1ados por refachos de radiaci\u00f3n electromagn\u00e9tica, poder\u00edan axudar a resolver o misterio.<\/p>\n<p>Nesta an\u00e1lise participou un equipo de investigadores do Instituto Galego de F\u00edsica de Altas Enerx\u00edas (IGFAE), centro mixto da Universidade de Santiago de Compostela e a Xunta de Galicia. &#8220;O noso traballo no IGFAE mellorou os m\u00e9todos de procura utilizados por LVK para sinais de fusi\u00f3ns binarias como GW230529, e entusi\u00e1smanos ver xa un resultado tan interesante. Sempre que se melloran os detectores ou os m\u00e9todos de an\u00e1lise, hai m\u00e1is posibilidades de que vexamos algo novo e sorprendente&#8221;, afirma o Dr. Thomas Dent, l\u00edder do programa de investigaci\u00f3n de ondas gravitacionais no IGFAE.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>O intervalo de masas entre estrelas de neutr\u00f3ns e buracos negros<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Tanto as estrelas de neutr\u00f3ns como os buracos negros son obxectos extremadamente densos que proceden do colapso e explosi\u00f3n de estrelas. Xa desde antes da primeira observaci\u00f3n directa das ondas gravitacionais, que tivo lugar en 2015, cada un destes obxectos detect\u00e1base de forma distinta: mentres que as masas das estrelas de neutr\u00f3ns determin\u00e1banse mediante observaci\u00f3ns de radio, as masas dos buracos negros calcul\u00e1banse a trav\u00e9s de datos de raios X.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00e9 agora, a maior parte destas medici\u00f3ns repart\u00edanse en dous rangos distintos e, entre eles, hab\u00eda unha especie de fenda, de entre 2 e 5 veces a masa do Sol, desde as estrelas de neutr\u00f3ns m\u00e1is pesadas ata os buracos negros m\u00e1is lixeiros. Con todo, desde 2015, un pequeno n\u00famero de medici\u00f3ns \u201cinvadiu\u2018\u2019 este intervalo de masas, o que xerou un importante debate entre a comunidade astrof\u00edsica.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15395\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/igfae-copia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GW230529_infografia-GAL-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As observaci\u00f3ns de ondas gravitacionais proporcionaron ata o momento 200 medici\u00f3ns de masas de obxectos compactos. E <a href=\"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/igfae-copia\/gl\/virgo-e-ligo-detectan-un-obxecto-misterioso-fusionandose-cun-buraco-negro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">algunha delas, como o sinal GW190814<\/a>, parece que tam\u00e9n se encontra neste territorio inexplorado: procede da fusi\u00f3n dun buraco negro cun obxecto compacto de masa superior \u00e1 das estrelas de neutr\u00f3ns m\u00e1is pesadas co\u00f1ecidas e posiblemente nese rango case desco\u00f1ecido.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u00ednda que xa se atoparon indicios da existencia de obxectos nesa brecha de masa tanto en ondas gravitacionais como electromagn\u00e9ticas, este sistema \u00e9 especialmente interesante porque se trata da primeira detecci\u00f3n en ondas gravitacionais dun obxecto situado na fenda de masa \u00a0e emparellado cunha estrela de neutr\u00f3ns&#8221;, explica a Dra. Sylvia Biscoveanu, da Universidade Northwestern dos Estados Unidos. &#8221; A observaci\u00f3n deste sistema tam\u00e9n implica unha maior posibilidade de observar no futuro a radiaci\u00f3n electromagn\u00e9tica emitida por fusi\u00f3ns de estrelas de neutr\u00f3ns con buracos negros&#8221;, engade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Numerical simulation of the compact binary system GW230529: Matter and waves\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3PKsBwH_bJE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Cuarto ciclo de observaci\u00f3n, con detectores m\u00e1is sensibles<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Este misterioso sinal foi detectado no cuarto ciclo de observaci\u00f3n da colaboraci\u00f3n LVK, que arrincou o 24 de maio de 2023. Esta nova fase conta con melloras nos detectores, na ciberinfraestrutura e no software de an\u00e1lise que lles permiten observar sinais m\u00e1is afastados e extraer m\u00e1is informaci\u00f3n sobre os eventos extremos nos que se xeran as ondas.<\/p>\n<p>Os resultados iniciais chegaron despois de s\u00f3 cinco d\u00edas de observaci\u00f3ns. A detecci\u00f3n do sinal para alertar \u00e1 colaboraci\u00f3n LVG en tempo real conseguiuse grazas \u00e1 contribuci\u00f3n da investigadora predoutoral do IGFAE Ver\u00f3nica Villa-Ortega e de Gareth Cabourn Davies, anteriormente investigador posdoutoral no IGFAE que agora traballa na Universidade de Portsmouth (Reino Unido). \u00a0A contribuci\u00f3n do investigador predoutoral do IGFAE Praveen Kumar tam\u00e9n axudou a confirmar a importancia do sinal en an\u00e1lises posteriores f\u00f3ra de li\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/localhost:8888\/igfae-copia\/gl\/virgo-e-ligo-detectan-un-obxecto-misterioso-fusionandose-cun-buraco-negro\/<\/p>\n<p>Est\u00e1 previsto que o cuarto per\u00edodo de observaci\u00f3n dure 20 meses, inclu\u00edndo unha pausa dun par de meses para levar a cabo o mantemento dos detectores e realizar unha serie de melloras. Ata o 16 de xaneiro de 2024, cando comezou esta a pausa, xa se identificaron un total de 81 sinales candidatas significativas. GW230529 \u00e9 a primeira delas que se publica tras unha investigaci\u00f3n detallada.<\/p>\n<p>Mentres contin\u00faa o per\u00edodo de observaci\u00f3n, o equipo de LVK est\u00e1n a analizar os datos da primeira metade do per\u00edodo e comprobando as 80 sinales candidatas significativas que xa foron identificadas. Ao final da cuarta rolda de observaci\u00f3n, en febreiro de 2025, o n\u00famero total de sinais de ondas gravitacionais observadas desde o primeiro achado, en 2015, superar\u00e1 xa as 200.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>O IGFAE en LIGO<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Despois da acreditaci\u00f3n do IGFAE como Unidade de Excelencia Mar\u00eda de Maeztu, en 2017, identificouse o elevado impacto potencial da li\u00f1a de investigaci\u00f3n de ondas gravitacionais. A aposta por esta disciplina fixo posible que o IGFAE incorpor\u00e1sese en outubro de 2018 \u00e1 colaboraci\u00f3n LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). Actualmente, o equipo que participa en LIGO, liderado por Thomas Dent, est\u00e1 tam\u00e9n composto por Juan Calder\u00f3n (investigador Ram\u00f3n y Cajal), e os estudantes de doutoramento Praveen Kumar, Ana Lorenzo e Ver\u00f3nica Villa.<\/p>\n<p>A recente renovaci\u00f3n do selo Mar\u00eda de Maeztu reforzar\u00e1 a aposta \u00a0do IGFAE no estudo das ondas gravitacionais, que abriu unha nova era en 2015 coa primeira detecci\u00f3n directa destes sinais, 100 anos despois de que Albert Einstein predixese teoricamente a s\u00faa existencia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15397\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15397\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15397\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/igfae-copia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GW230529_imaxe.png\" alt=\"A imaxe amosa a fusi\u00f3n dun buraco negro de baixa masa (en gris escuro) cunha estrela de neutr\u00f3ns.
