NEXT es una colaboraci\u00f3n internacional que estudia la verdadera naturaleza de los neutrinos, unas piezas clave para encajar el rompecabezas del modelo est\u00e1ndar de la f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas. El trabajo est\u00e1 encabezado por el equipo colaborador de NEXT en el Centro de F\u00edsica de Materiales (CSIC-UPV\/EHU) y el Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) del Pa\u00eds Vasco.<\/p>\n<p>El art\u00edculo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-35153-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ba+2 ion trapping using organic submonolayer for ultra-low background neutrinoless double beta detector<\/em><\/a>, fue publicado en diciembre de 2022 y recoge los resultados de las mediciones realizadas en el Laboratorio Subterr\u00e1neo de Canfranc (LSC). Estas instalaciones, excavadas a 800 metros de profundidad bajo las monta\u00f1as del Pirineo aragon\u00e9s, son un escenario apropiado para frenar la radiaci\u00f3n c\u00f3smica que llega a la Tierra y poder investigar con mayor precisi\u00f3n el comportamiento de los neutrinos.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13240\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13240\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13240\" src=\"https:\/\/igfae.usc.es\/igfae\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lsc-canfranc-web-3-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"Canfranc, que acoge el experimento NEXT. Cr\u00e9dito: Pegenaute Studio.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Desintegraci\u00f3n doble beta sin neutrinos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Los neutrinos son las \u00fanicas part\u00edculas que pueden ser su propia antipart\u00edcula, lo que supondr\u00eda que fuesen completamente neutrales. Sin embargo, demostrar este comportamiento es un enorme reto cient\u00edfico y tecnol\u00f3gico, ya que los neutrinos son extremadamente esquivos y muy ligeros. En caso de constatar este proceso, el descubrimiento tendr\u00eda un profundo impacto en la F\u00edsica de Part\u00edculas y la Cosmolog\u00eda, pudiendo explicar la asimetr\u00eda que existe en el universo entre materia y antimateria.<\/p>\n<p>Para conseguirlo, es necesario observar un proceso en el que el neutrino se comporta al mismo tempo como part\u00edcula y antipart\u00edcula: en ese caso, dos neutrones se convierten en dos protones intercambiando un neutrino\/antineutrino y liberando dos electrones. Este proceso se denomina desintegraci\u00f3n doble beta sin neutrinos (\u03b2 \u03b20\u03bd).<\/p>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n publicada en Nature Communications se centra en el trabajo que est\u00e1 realizando el equipo de NEXT para detectar uno de los posibles eventos que se\u00f1alar\u00edan este proceso: la desintegraci\u00f3n de un \u00e1tomo de xenon (Xe) en un i\u00f3n de bario (Ba) y dos electrones. Con el objetivo de crear un detector que muestre este proceso, el art\u00edculo demuestra que los iones de bario pueden ser atrapados en condiciones de ultravac\u00edo (UHV) por una capa de mol\u00e9culas org\u00e1nicas sobre una superficie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IGFAE-NEXT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Desde el IGFAE, el grupo involucrado en este experimento (IGFAE-NEXT), compuesto por Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Hernando Morata, Joshua Renner, Carlos Herv\u00e9s, Mart\u00edn Perez y Gonzalo D\u00edaz, figura tambi\u00e9n como firmante del art\u00edculo destacado ahora por Nature. Seg\u00fan explica Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Hernando Morata, el equipo que trabaja desde Santiago de Compostela contribuye a los detectores de neutrinos de NEXT en aspectos como el desarrollo de algoritmos de calibraci\u00f3n, de reconstrucci\u00f3n de trazas y de identificaci\u00f3n de part\u00edculas con t\u00e9cnicas de machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>En la colaboraci\u00f3n NEXT, liderada por el Donosti International Physics Center (DIPC), y el Instituto de F\u00edsica Corpuscular (IFIC), centro mixto del CSIC y la Universidad de Valencia, participan m\u00e1s de 80 cient\u00edficos de 13 centros de investigaci\u00f3n procedentes de Espa\u00f1a, Portugal, Israel y Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s de NEXT, el IGFAE tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 involucrado en el que ser\u00e1 el mayor detector de neutrinos, Hyper Kamiokande, actualmente en construcci\u00f3n en Jap\u00f3n.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>El equipo editorial del grupo Nature, del que forma parte la revista Nature Communications, ha seleccionado un trabajo del experimento NEXT, del que forma parte el Instituto Galego de F\u00edsica de Altas Enerx\u00edas (IGFAE).
