Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia, a historical region located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The city has around 100,000 inhabitants and is known for its university life, the influx of tourists from around the world, and its constant and intense social and cultural activity. It has a temperate oceanic climate, with an annual average temperature of 14°C.
Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport, about 20 minutes from the IGFAE, has direct flights to London, Paris, Brussels, Munich, Geneva, and Basel (Switzerland), and major Spanish destinations (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and Palma de Mallorca).
Santiago de Compostela is also connected to Madrid by high-speed train (approximately three hours), bus, and highway (approximately six hours). The city of Porto (Portugal) / Sá Carneiro International Airport are approximately 2.5 hours away by road, with frequent bus services.
The main cities of Galicia, A Coruña and Vigo, are connected to Santiago by high-speed rail, bus lines, and highway, less than an hour away. Each has its own airport (Alvedro – LCG, A Coruña; and Peinador – VGO, Vigo), with domestic flights and some international connections.
